Toshiba Excite AT200 Tablet – will hit in January

Toshiba has released a new tablet in the form of the Toshiba Excite AT200. The new slate is more slender and lighter than the current Thrive range of tablets, and sports a 1.2GHz TI OMAP 4430 dual-core processor, as opposed to the NVidia Tegra 2 chips found in the Thrive. The 10.1-inch 1280 x 800 pixel resolution display of Excite AT200 is the same as in Thrive. Excite AT200 is set to launch in January in Germany but there’s no word yet on any US release. Toshiba Canada also reports a January release date.

The Excite AT200 will feature a 2MP front-facing and a 5MP rear-facing camera, as with the Toshiba Thrive, and offers either 16GB or 32GB storage. However, where the chunkier Toshiba Thrive features a full-sized SDcard, USB and HDMI ports, the minified Excite AT200 has to economize on space and so offers only microSD and microHDMI ports and a miniUSB socket. And the battery is no longer replaceable, as on the Thrive. All in all, it’s slimmed down and has shed some weight but that souped-up dualcore processor might well be enough to convince consumers of downsize and upgrade.

Where the Thrive is 0.6 inches thick, the Excite AT200 stretches the tape at just 0.3 inches – very slim indeed.
