On one hand we have the undisputed market ruler and on the other a potential market ruler, yes I am talking about the iPad 2 and the Sony Tablet S. Comparing these two devices is a very difficult task because these two are quite different from each other, but a proper comparison needs proper difference. So without any further ado let’s get started.
Sony Tablet S vs. iPad 2
CPU and RAM
The Sony Tablet S is packed with a NVIDIA Tegra 2 1GHz dual core processor which has a solid backup of 1GB RAM. Now, talking about the iPad 2, it has a 1GHz dual core Apple A5 chip which is well complimented by 512 MB DDR2 RAM. One can see that with a bigger RAM the Tablet S has a conspicuous advantage over the iPad 2.
Dimension
In the segment of dimension the ergonomically Sony Tablet S offers Dimension of 241.2 x 174.3×10.1 mm. And talking about the weight the Tablet S weighs 598g.the other gadget in the section, the iPad 2 has a dimension of 241.2×185.7×8.8mm whereas the weight is 601g.the screen size of the Tablet S is 9.4 inches whereas the same of the iPad 2 is 9.7inches. The Tablet S has a lighter body but the iPad 2 has a bigger screen so both the tablets are at the same pedestal in this segment.
Storage
In the storage capacity segment the Sony Tablet S offers two variants; 16 GB and 32 GB but the ipad 2 offers three; 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB. With more choices on offers the iPad 2 is the winner here.
Display
The Sony Tablet S offers a 9.4inches capacitive touch screen which has a wonderful resolution of 1280×800, the screen has a10 points detection. The screen of the Sony Tablet S is a WXGA TFT LCD. Now the iPad 2, it has a 9.7inches LED-backlit glossy widescreen which has a Multi-Touch display with IPS technology. The resolution of the screen is 1024x768p. Without doubt the Sony Tablet S emerges victor in the Display section.
Camera
Sony Tablet S offers a staggering 5MP Rear camera which has a 2592×1944 resolution and a VGA Front camera for self-portrait and video chat. The iPad 2 in reply offers you a .7MP camera which is capable of recording HD video at 720p at 30 frames per seconds.as far as the front camera is concerned there is VGA front camera which is capable of facetime calls. The Sony Tablet S wins by a copious margin here.
Battery
The Sony Tablet S has a 5000 mAh Li-ion battery which gives the users a work time of 8 hours and a standby time of 430 hours. If the battery of the iPad 2 is in question, it offers you a 25watt-hours li-polymer battery that gives the users a work time of around 10h. I have a concrete inkling that the iPad 2 has a slight advantage over the Sony Tablet S.
Operating System
The Operating System is as vital part of the gadget as any, and I will go to the extent of saying that it is the very identity of the machine. The Sony Tablet S runs Android 3.2 Honeycomb but in the future it will get an IceCream Sandwich up-gradation. As far as the iPad 2 is concerned the it runs its own iOS 5 operating system. Now, because the Apple Inc. has control over both the hardware and software of the iPad 2 it functions better than the Sony Tablet S, because of the better co-ordination between the hardware and software.
Connectivity
In the connectivity section the Sony Tablet S offers Bluetooth 2.1 and Wi-Fi 802.1 b/g/n. Whereas the iPad 2 offers the same. So both the Tablets are at the same pedestal in this section.
The Verdict
The Apple Inc. has a more brand value than Sony {at least in the Tablet world}. But in technical details like display camera and RAM Sony Tablet S has superiority over the iPad 2. It would not be wrong to say that a common man would prefer the iPad 2 over the Tablet S but a person with technical proficiency would go for the Sony Tablet S.
