Sony VAIO notebook new lineup design for early 2012

Although the Consumer Electronics Show 2012 has just ended, Sony decided to keep some surprises up its sleeve for the post-CES period and revealed a couple of interesting new updates and upgrades to the models comprising its VAIO notebook family.

Without a doubt, one of the most important line of products in the Sony VAIO notebook lineup is the Z series, who’s got an all-new Carbon Fiber Silver option, as well as an optional LTE mobile broadband built-in, supporting 4G data service. Plus, the Z series now comes packed with the latest, most powerful Intel Core i5 and i7 Sandy Bridge CPUs, as well as RAID 0 SSDs, all available at some pretty high price points, obviously, starting at around $1949.99.
Next in line comes the S series, who’s also gone through quite an overhaul, both the 13 and 15-inch models in this family getting CPU upgrades up to Core i7, as well as Hybrid Graphics with either an AMD Radeon HD 6470M (512MB VRAM) or AMD Radeon HD 6630M (1GB VRAM) card.
Plus, the 15-inch version also comes with a full HD IPS display, with a price point starting at around 980 US dollars, while the 13-inch starts at around 800 US dollars.
The Sony VAIO notebook lineup refresh continues with a processor upgrade of the E series, as well as an impressive design update of the C series laptops, now available in some pretty eye-catchy designs.
Last, but certainly not least, the Japanese company points out that they’ve also upgrade some of the applications typically accompanying the Sony VAIO notebook lineup, the most notable being a redesigned Media Gallery application.

LG A540 15.6-Inche Glasses-Free 3D Notebook

There are many companies that plan on launching glasses-free products, but it looks like LG will be the first major manufacturer to have more than a demo product. The A540 is one of those laptops that possesses every trait needed to make people reconsider their view that a laptop should be as thin and light as possible.

Measuring 15.6 inches in diagonal, the A540 has a Full HD (1920×1080) glasses-free 3D display, with an IPS panel to boot.In other words, the viewing angles on this thing aren’t half bad (178 degrees horizontal/vertical, or thereabouts).

The insides of the notebooks rely on an Intel Core i5 or Core i7 central processing unit and up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM to be implemented as well. The best part is that the mobile PC features a discrete GPU as well: the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 555.Other specifications include a hard disk drive (HDD) of 1TB, Bluetooth 3.0, 4.1-channel audio, USB 2.0 and 3.0, Gigabit Ethernet and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi.

The whole rig weighs 2.6 kilograms (5.73 pounds) and relies on a head-tracking camera (placed above the screen). The LG A540 is sure to impress gamers when it finally starts shipping in the second quarter of the year (2012).

‘Super Ultrabooks’ – LG Z330 and Z430

CES 2012 has seen a few manufacturers entering sectors in which they previously were unknown. Fujitsu wowed with its underwater tablet, and Dell made a belated entrance to the ultrabook market with the Dell XPS 13. Now Korean giant LG has launched two ultrabooks at CES 2012. But this is no shrinking wallflower entry to the sector – the press release refers to them as Super Ultrabooks.

The two models are the LG Z330 and the LG Z430, and the pair are certainly amongst the slimmest and lightest ultrabooks on the market. They’re not bad-looking either. But for the ‘super’ designation to carry any weight, the Z330 and Z430 need to pack some muscle in the spec department. First off, the display.

A few ultrabook manufacturers have bragged about levering 14-inch displays into 13-inch chasses, with reduced bezels or edge-to-edge displays helping out, but LG has gone one better by squeezing a 13-inch screen into a tiny 12-inch shell. Where the majority of ultrabooks taper down from 17mm or 18mm to some freakishly wafer-like edge at the front, the Z330 has settled for a slimmer overall look, measuring 14.7mm all the way from front to back. And at 1.2kg it’s one of the lightest in category. That extra thickness has been put to good use by LG, so that the Z330 features a full HDMI socket and three rather than the customary two USB ports. And of course there’s plenty of space for an Ethernet jack, which is lacking on the Acer Aspire S3
or on Asus Zenbook UX-21.

The ‘Super’ prefix is appropriate thanks to the speed and power of the Z330 – it’s top-tier Intel i7 CPU and state-of-the-art SATA3 SSD combine to deliver a complete boot cycle in – wait for it – under 10 seconds. The 14-inch Z430, which is a good bit heavier at 1.5kg, offers a hybrid solution, with a 500GB hard drive and smaller SSD for the OS and essential software. We’re not sure whether the Z430 will be offered in pure-SSD form.

Intel Nikiski Transparent Laptop Concept & Sliding Ultrabook

At Intel’s CES press event this morning, they showed off a very interesting Ultrabook prototype called Nikiski. The Nikiski has a unique design featuring a clear glass touchpad that takes up the space underneath the keyboard which is usually reserved for your palm rest.

The touchpad acts like any regular touchpad, but it has the ability to detect when your wrists or palms are resting on the touchpad, palm rejection kicks in so the cursor isn’t moved accidentally. But that’s not the impressive part of the Nikiski prototype. When the Nikiski is closed, the transparent touchpad allows the user to see and interact with information on their computer. This is called the Nikiski Reveal mode

Users can swipe through calendar info, news feeds, even surf WebPages. Then when the Nikiski is opened, the computer resumes in the same context that the user was working in during Reveal mode. Nikiski is still just a concept PC but it’s now functional and Intel expects to work with partners this year to make it a reality.

New Lenovo ThinkPad Edge S430, first to go Thunderbolt

Up until now, Apple’s Mac systems were the only ones to feature Intel’s ultra-fast Thunderbolt interface, but it seems that Lenovo has some different plans in this matter, since the company’s new ThinkPad Edge S430 will actually be the first notebook PC to incorporate this impressive innovation.
Announced as a part of Lenovo pre-CES 2012 lineup, the new ThinkPad Edge S430 follows the IBM-set business-elegant design line of all notebooks in this series, but also features a couple of interesting metallic accents, while also being just one-inch thick.
The new 14-inch portable machine packs a host of features most business users will certainly enjoy, such as a choice of Core processors from Intel, a suitable amount of DDR3 RAM memory, the possibility to add up to 1TB HDDs, and a choice of Intel integrated or NVIDIA Optimus graphics.
Plus, for multimedia-loving execs, the notebook will come equipped with Dolby Home Theatre v4 audio, an optical unit, while connectivity options include, beside the aforementioned Thunderbolt tech, USB 3.0 as well.
Last, but certainly not least, we’ll have to mention that pricing for the Thunderbolt-packing ThinkPad Edge S430 will start at around 750 US dollars, the new laptop being set to arrive in stores at some point in June, in certain select markets.

New Asus N45J Mystic Edition is one stylish notebook

Over time, Asus has managed to come up with a variety of stylish, exquisite-looking notebooks, and that’s also the case with one of their latest developments, namely the N45J Mystic Edition model.

As Techinstyle.tv informs us, the new designer notebook by Asus represents a tribute paid by the Taiwan-based company to local singer-songwriter Jay Chou. For this reason, it sports a couple of distinctive features, such as a white body, some urban art on the top side, plus Jay Chou’s autographs on the palmrest and lid.
While the external design really marks some changes compared to the basic model, very few things have changed as far as the hardware configuration is concerned. Thus, the N45J Mystic Edition will offer users a choice of Core i7, i5 or i3 processors, as well as up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM memory and an NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M graphics card.
Additional features also include multiple storage options (including a couple of SSDs), as well as Bang & Olufsen ICEpower speakers and a set of standard connectivity and networking options. As expected, this model will most likely never make it out of East Asia, given the fact that Jay Chou’s mostly known there, and less on the Western markets.

MSI Wind U180 netbook has Cedar Trail inside

MSI is probably better known for making motherboards than computers, but a few years ago the company was one of the driving forces in the netbook space. MSI was one of the first companies to release netbooks with 10 inch displays, Intel Atom processors, and decent keyboards.

Recent MSI products haven’t really pushed the boundaries of portable computing as much as the MSI netbooks of 2008, but the company is at least keeping pace with its competitors.
A new netbook called the MSI Wind U180 is up for pre-order in Germany for under 350 Euros. It has a 1.86 GHz Intel Atom N2800 Cedar Trail processor and GMA 3650 graphics with support for 1080p HD video. Some models also appear to feature HDMI output.
The rest of the specs look like they were taken out of last year’s playbook. The Wind U180 has 1GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, a 0.3MP webcam, and Windows 7 Starter Operating system. The netbook also has a 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display and a design that hasn’t changed much in nearly 4 years.
There’s no word on if or when the MSI Wind U180 will go on sale in the US, but I’d be surprised if the company didn’t at least bring a few demo units to the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next week.
