Intel Nikiski Transparent Laptop Concept & Sliding Ultrabook


At Intel’s CES press event this morning, they showed off a very interesting Ultrabook prototype called Nikiski. The Nikiski has a unique design featuring a clear glass touchpad that takes up the space underneath the keyboard which is usually reserved for your palm rest.


 

The touchpad acts like any regular touchpad, but it has the ability to detect when your wrists or palms are resting on the touchpad, palm rejection kicks in so the cursor isn’t moved accidentally. But that’s not the impressive part of the Nikiski prototype. When the Nikiski is closed, the transparent touchpad allows the user to see and interact with information on their computer. This is called the Nikiski Reveal mode


Users can swipe through calendar info, news feeds, even surf WebPages. Then when the Nikiski is opened, the computer resumes in the same context that the user was working in during Reveal mode. Nikiski is still just a concept PC but it’s now functional and Intel expects to work with partners this year to make it a reality.

Intel Medfield-Powered Phone & Tablet Coming In 2012

Intel has revealed its latest Medfield smartphone and tablet reference designs, the path-laying hardware the chip company hopes will persuade manufacturers to adopt its x86 mobile chip rather than stick with ARM.The two devices – the phone running Gingerbread and the tablet running Ice Cream Sandwich were demonstrated to MIT’s Technology Review, though only a render of the handset has been released. Unlike previous Intel chips, Medfield pulls all of the core processing tasks onto a single chip.



This so-called System-on-Chip (SoC) design mimics the design strategy of ARM licensees like NVIDIA, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments, which have been far more successful in getting their silicon in mobile devices than Intel has managed.The phone was powerful and pleasing to use, on a par with the latest iPhone and Android handsets and it could play Blu-Ray-quality video and stream it to a TV if desired; Web browsing was smooth and fast.

Meanwhile, the pair are capable of capturing ten full-size 8-megapixel images at a rate of 15 per second, using technology in part based on Silicon Hive, the mobile processing specialists Intel acquired earlier in the year.According to Intel’s own tests, Medfield delivers faster browsing, better graphics performance and lower power consumption than “the top three” phones on sale today.

New Intel Cedar Trail N2600 processor for ASUS


We recently reported on Asus’s plans for a new netbook featuring Intel’s new Atom N2600 Cedar Trail processor, built on a 32 nm technology. Netbook news offers a quick comparison of the new Intel chip against the N570 and AMD C50 CPUs, the most obvious competitors to the low-voltage N2600. Official specs for the N2600 have not yet been released by Intel, but so far we know the N2600 is a dual-core hyper-threaded CPU, clocked at 1.6GHz. That’s a fair step up from the standard netbook processor line of single-core hyper-threaded processors, and the new chip features Intel HD 3600 integrated graphics, which runs at 400MHz and is DirectX 10.1 compatible. It looks as though the N2600 will only support a maximum of 2GB DDR3 RAM.



On test is the very same Asus Eee PC X101CH, expected to launch in January, and proudly spring a Cedar Trail N2600 PCU. Flash 720p video and YouTube are thankfully both playable and thanks to the latest version of Intel’s impressive on-board graphics solutions, the N2600 manages 1080p HD playback well, provided it’s stored locally rather than being streamed from elsewhere.

The new Asus netbook is fan-less, so it’s virtually noiseless, but that has meant the N2600 had to be built to low-voltage, and therefore lower performance, specifications. You have to look at the bigger picture when comparing this processor to the competition.

The N570 outperforms the N2600 on raw CPU benchmarks, but state-of-the-art Intel integrated graphics means the N2600 is much faster overall, especially for everyday tasks like surfing, office suites or photo-editing. Experts estimate that Intel’s current Pine Trail HD3000 integrated graphics are about equal in performance to a mid-range dedicated graphics card from a couple of years ago, so the Asus Eee PC X101CH is a great deal more powerful than the last generation of netbooks. All of which means widespread reports of the death of the netbook may well have been greatly exaggerated. When lined up next to AMD’s C-50 CPU, results are mixed however overall the C-50 shades it. Which is all the more reason to hold off buying until we see netbooks offering the N2600 big brother, the 1.86GHz N2800, which also offers a superior graphics processor too?

Intel Ivy Bridge Processor Official Benchmark and Slides


Intel Corp. has revealed official performance advantage expectations for its next-generation microprocessors code-named Ivy Bridge.
As expected, the Ivy Bridge processors manage to come out on top in all the scenarios tested, which was to be expected considering these bring some new architecture improvements and higher Turbo Boost speeds.


 
Of course that when graphics come into play, the difference between the two cores is even greater since Ivy Bridge went through a major redesign in this area.
They’ve produced a raft of benchmarks, which reveal improvements such as 56% in ArcSoft Media Expresso, 25% in Excel 2010 and a 199% gain in the 3D Mark Vantage GPU benchmark.

Unfortunately, they haven’t released any benchmarks based on high performance 3D games, but it’s probably safe to say that they will be similarly improved.
Now, on to the benchmarks, which compare their new 3.4 GHz i7-3770 (4 cores + HT) with the current 3.4 GHz i7-2600, also with 4 cores + HT:

  •     +7% higher overall SYSmark 2012 score
  •     +14% higher overall HDXPRT 2011 score
  •     +15% higher Cinebench 11.5 score
  •     +13% better ProShow Gold 4.5 result
  •     +25% faster performance in Excel 2010
  •     +56% faster performance in ArcSoft Media Expresso
  •     +192% higher overall 3DMark Vantage score
  •     +17% faster performance in 3DMark Vantage CPU benchmark
  •     +199% faster performance in 3DMark Vantage GPU benchmark
The key architectural enhancements delivering these improvements are:
  1.     Intel’s new 22nm 3D Tri-Gate technology. More on this here
  2.     Enhanced AVX acceleration
  3.     IGP performance improved by 30% compared to its predecessor
  4.     IGP supports DX11 and OpenCL 1.1
  5.     PCI Express 3.0 x16 interface, including a PCI Express 2.0 x4 controller

3D Visual Technology at Intel Sandy Bridge
